Attenuation of Rayleigh waves due to surface roughness

چکیده

Rayleigh waves are well known to attenuate due scattering when they propagate over a rough surface. Theoretical investigations have derived analytical expressions linking the attenuation coefficient statistical surface roughness parameters, namely, surface's root mean squared height and correlation length wave's wavenumber. In literature, three regimes been identified—the geometric (short wavelength), stochastic medium (long wavelength) regimes. This study uses high-fidelity two-dimensional finite element (FE) modelling scheme validate existing predictions provide unified approach studying problem of wave from surfaces as same model can be used obtain values regardless regime. regimes, very good agreement is found between theory FE results both in terms absolute for asymptotic power relationships. regime, relationships obtained through combination dimensional analysis simulations. The here also useful insight into verifying three-dimensional because method its derivation analogous.

Spectral Dependent Degradation of the Solar Diffuser on Suomi-NPP VIIRS Due to Surface Roughness-Induced Rayleigh Scattering

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard Suomi National Polar Orbiting Partnership (SNPP) uses a solar diffuser (SD) as its radiometric calibrator for the reflective solar band calibration. The SD is made of SpectralonTM (one type of fluoropolymer) and was chosen because of its controlled reflectance in the Visible/Near-Infrared/Shortwave-Infrared region and its near-Lamber...

Deduction of static surface roughness from complex excess attenuation.

Data for complex excess attenuation have been used to determine the effective surface admittance and hence characteristic roughness size of a surface comprising a random distribution of semi-cylindrical rods on an acoustically hard plane. The inversion for roughness size is based on a simplified boss model. The technique is shown to be effective to within 4%, up to a threshold roughness packing...

Static and dry friction due to multiscale surface roughness.

It is shown on the basis of scaling arguments that a disordered interface between two elastic solids will quite generally exhibit static and dry friction (i.e., kinetic friction which does not vanish as the sliding velocity approaches zero) because of Tomlinson-model instabilities that occur for small-length-scale asperities. This provides a possible explanation for why static and dry friction ...

Rayleigh Waves in a Homogeneous Magneto-Thermo Voigt-Type Viscoelastic Half-Space under Initial Surface Stresses

This paper deals with the propagation of magneto-thermo Rayleigh waves in a homogeneous viscoelastic half-space under initial stress. It has been observed that velocity of Rayleigh waves depends on viscosity, magnetic field, temperature and initial stress of the half-space. The frequency equation for Rayleigh waves under the effect of magnetic field, stress and temperature for both viscoelastic...

Characterisation of Surface Residual Stress using High Frequency Rayleigh Waves

In order to control residual stress distribution in glass, techniques based on the phenomenon of photoelasticity are efficient, though subject to the inherent limitations of all optical techniques. To mitigate these limitations, we exploit the phenomenon of acoustoelasticity to estimate residual stress distribution, using surface acoustic waves. In this study, we characterize the surface residu...
